Stressing out over moving? Same. As a millennial renter, aren’t we all, moving a bunch somehow became a consistent theme within our life story. According to move.org, people within the United State on average will move 11.7 times in his or her lifetime. We move for many reasons, new job location, affordability, upgrading space or you hate your neighbors. Whatever it is, 11.7 times is a whole hell of a lot.
Unfortunately, moving from my current location isn’t by choice. Our current house and neighborhood is scheduled to be taken down for the construction of new apartments. To add to the craziness, we’ve been given less than a 2 month notice to find a new place, sign for it, get approved, and move in. Imagine the stress levels of a very busy working adult in a surprise situation like this. Hint: It’s pretty stressful.
However we did find a home, and now I am in the mist of packing. Making lists and checking them off calms my nerves. So, here is a few tips and tricks to optimize your moving time and hopefully make the process of moving less stressful.
Start Packing Early
Pack away off season wardrobes, books, extra linen, etc. Things that you won’t be using for the next few weeks or so. The earlier the better, I’d recommend starting 3 weeks prior to your moving date.
Use Small Boxes
Big boxes can be tempting, but usually become heavier and harder to move. Keep things in smaller boxes but don’t over stuff them.
Downsize Your Stuff
There’s never been a better time to Marie Kondo your shit. Donate to charity, give belongings to friends and family or give it the boot. Think of it this way, every item you get rid of is one thing less to move.
Pack One Room at a Time
Breaking down each room individually will help you keep things organized (box wise) and will aid in the unpacking process.
Label EVERYTHING
Channel your inner Monica Geller. Having people help move? Labeling each box with what’s inside and where it should go will help make the process easier in the box drop-off. Movers are basically given a roadmap to where you want things without you having to give them guidance with every move they make.
Keep Valuables and Important Documents
Grab a box specifically for these types of belongings and out of anyone else’s hands in the moving process. I’d hate for you to lose your passport, birth certificate or some family heirloom in the move.
Pack a Weekender Bag
Moving is a process and with a busy life it can be extremely inconvenient. Think ahead a few days and pack a weekender bag with PJs and an extra set of clothes or whatever you’ll need within the next 48 hours. I know it might be hard to think that way, but you’ll thank me later when you’re not rubbishing through boxes trying to find moving shoes, gym clothes or a rain jacket.
Hope these tips are as handy for you as they were for me. As always thanks for reading and remember to breathe and lift with your legs.
Sincerely, a very sore / tired Karrisa
