If you can stomach the winding road of the Road to Hana, I highly recommend checking out the dramatic and beautiful Red Sand Beach. Located on the eastern coast of Maui island, this hidden cove is unlike any other and I was in complete awe of the entire experience.
Aginst the rugged coastline is where the magic could really be seen. With every crash of a wave, the white caps, dark blue ocean and red sand created the above scene. It felt like we were on a completely different planet.
The crescent-shaped beach cuts deep into the Ka’uiki Head cinder cone. The rust-red lava cinder cliffs supply the beach with its red sand. The beach itself is protected by a wall of jagged black lava rock that creates a barrier keeping the water somewhat calm for swimming.
The trail path is on the right hand side of the Hana School near the Baseball Field and Travaasa Resort. The hike itself is rather short (10-12 min) but difficult in spots. We heard stories on how it can be dangerous during the rainy season. I believe it. Not for those lacking moderate hiking skills.
History: The bay name comes from kai halulu which means "roaring sea" in the Hawaiian language. Several battles were fought against invaders from Hawaiʻi island and it was also the birthplace of powerful civil leader Queen Kaʻahumanu. Something to think about as you embrace this entire experience.
Address: Kaihalulu Beach Hana, HI 96713
Side note: To our surprise we did spot a few bottomless /topless bathers.
